Platform and channels: What’s the difference?

A platform is owned media, the primary resource for information about your organization and a multi-function tool that has capabilities to interact with people. It’s where someone would submit a job application, purchase your product, find in-depth information about your services, download forms, contact customer service, etc. For the majority of organizations, their platform is their website.

Channels are all the various ways you communicate specific messages, from paid outlets where you publish advertisements (such as TV/radio commercials and digital ads) to organic outlets where you publish one-time messages (such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn).

Your platform is an ongoing presence on the internet fully controlled by you. Channels are outlets that display your messages temporarily and are controlled by other companies.

Maintaining a well-designed, updated platform as your permanent source of information supported by time-sensitive or event-specific communications on several channels helps you broaden your audience, grow your business and remain in control of your image and message. In other words, a strong platform enables you to avoid giving away control of your brand to another company and protect your independence.
